Mrs. DeBoer's Favorite Sites

www.gms.ocps.k12.fl.us

This site is a wonderful sight written by the students of Gotha Middle School in Florida.  The information created and given is written on a student level and is easy to understand.  It includes not only a World of English area that I would want the students to use, but it also includes other middle school level topics of information like US government and algebra. Using this site is extremely easy.  The only weakness is that it is limited in the information it provides and may not have areas of interest for all students nation-wide.  This site relates to the writing content standards #3 and #17.

www.syvum.com

This site is for all students grades k-8.  The site is sponsored by Syvum Technologies.  It is online interactive education and learning activities for kids.  Subject areas included are math, English, science, and languages.  Many academic standards are emphasized in the activities on this site including reading #12 and writing #17.  Information is supplied in the following English curriculum areas: poems and rhyming, and verbs and pronouns. The site invites interaction in that its layout is brightly colored and easy to read and is easy to use and understand.  I like this site as it gives immediate feedback to the user on how they did.

Look at me go! I'm so fast! I'm the fastest in the class!

www.cctc.comnet.edu/grammar/index.htm

This site is a guide to grammar and writing for students in junior high and high school.  The student is able to choose from several areas from sentences to paragraphs to essays to research papers.  The site also covers grammar and mechanical help to a writer.  This site coincides extremely well with many of the standards in writing especially #17. It covers different types of writing and the grammar conventions also.  This site would be awesome for both students to view for help and teachers to use to supplement writing units.  This site is hosted by Professor of English Charles Darling from Capital Community College in Hartford, Conn.

www.puzzlemaker.com

This site is for student and teacher.  The puzzle maker program works well for teachers who are making games for students. I do this weekly for spelling and vocabulary.  My students have used this program when completing novel contract requirements.  The site is very easy to use in that it provides simple instructions.  Other features of interest to me at this site are the clip art and the dictionary plus. The dictionary plus is also a thesaurus. Student could use this to define words for their weekly spelling units, when writing, and when reading.  Discovery or Discovery Schools is the maker of this site.  This is one of my favorites.

I can't fit all this information into my brain!

  www.teachersfirst.com

This site is great.  I especially like the mind stretchers.  They vary in degree or level and type.  There are inventions, games, stories, and puzzles that encourage thinking skills.  I love to start or end the class with a brainteaser.  This site is superb for this area.  Although, this is not directly related to an English standard, don’t we all need to exert and bend the mind? This site is co-sponsored by the Association of the US Army and the Network for Instructional TV, Inc.

www.sdstatelibrary.com

This site is extremely useful to students doing research.  The reference material is so accessible and relevant to student projects.  Using this site teaches students research skills and helps them find information needed.  We have used this site in researching authors and books.  Any classroom could use this vital site on a daily basis.  This site is applicable to the reading standard #21 by using a media center for study and research.  This site is sponsored by the Department of Education and Cultural Affairs.

www.nmsa.org

Being a middle school teacher and a member of SDAMLE, this site has become very important to me in the last few years.  It is the National Middle School Association. The site provides me with information on the organization itself, resources pertinent to middle school educators, services, and professional development opportunities.  I guess the things I like most are the book lists and the articles that keep me abreast on the new and hot items in middle school education.
